Alter Ego by Estelle Daurore was absolutely amazing! Nivalis aims to become weapon master of the kingdom, but the awakening of his magic threatens to give him a different destiny.

I bought this novel at a local book fair. It was originally crowdfunded, so I got a pretty illustration and free bookmarks with it. The author's genius idea is that the glossary is on one of the bookmarks.

All the characters are hermaphrodites (reminder not to call actual intersex people "hermaphrodites," which is only to be used when the whole species has male and female characteristics) and fall under three genders. Most of the enbies use the French neo-pronoun ul and a grammar invented by the author. A bigender character and a genderfluid character use il/elle.

My darling Nivalis is autistic and I ship him with an enby. <3 They're likely to become canon in the future, I think.

++ We ended up having quite a massive thunderstorm recently, while not uncommon for there to be big bursts of rain nonstop for several days, having it be accompanied by thunder for the entire time was pretty abnormal. It was fantastic. We'll get punished for this during the summer (hot, humid, over hundred degree weather weeks on end, something I am not looking forward to) but it was a pretty awesome to experience.

++ The crew of Artemis II arrived back home safely, and although brief it was such a wonderful thing to witness something this historic in such a heartwarming way.

++ The Spaceballs sequel has officially been titled as Spaceballs: The New One. XD

++ Recently I've been watching The West Wing, a political drama that I only saw little bits and pieces of when it was airing but never actually got into at the time. Watching it now though, I can better appreciate it and I understand the praise and recognition it received, from the performances and especially with how everything is filmed -- as it is known for their "walk and talk" long-shot take moments particularly throughout the White House.

However, it is bittersweet since it demonstrates what an actual intellectually competent presidency is supposed to look like. I cannot help but get this sense of nostalgic yearning for something like this especially in comparison to what we have now, and I'm sure fans of the show also thought the same thing when it was airing too. It's a merely a fantasy of competent politicians and world leaders while also focusing on the stresses and difficulty of the job with varying levels of serious, emotional, and ridiculous scenarios. It makes me think of all of the other media that does something similar, from political comedy movies The American President (also by Aaron Sorkin) and Dave to shows such as Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, they're lighthearted in nature but set in a very serious career environment. While The West Wing tackles more serious situations the drama is balanced out nicely with the funny and lighthearted character moments. It's an engaging show that I've been enjoying lately. It's also fun seeing familiar actor faces, from both the main cast and some guest appearances, and the performances they give.

The case of the missing notifications

I keep forgetting to post about this: we've been troubleshooting the "missing notifications" problem for the past few days. (Well, I say "we", really I mean Mark and Robby; I'm just the amanuensis.) It's been one of those annoying loops of "find a logical explanation for what could be causing the problem, fix that thing, observe that the problem gets better for some people but doesn't go away completely, go back to step one and start again", sigh.

Mark is hauling out the heavy debugging ordinance to try to find the root cause. Once he's done building all the extra logging tools he needs, he'll comment to this entry. After he does, if you find a comment that should have gone to your inbox and sent an email notification but didn't, leave him a link to the comment that should have sent the notification, as long as the comment itself was made after Mark says he's collecting them. (I'd wait and post this after he gets the debug code in but I need to go to sleep and he's not sure how long it will take!)

We're sorry about the hassle! Irregular/sporadic issues like this are really hard to troubleshoot because it's impossible to know if they're fixed or if they're just not happening while you're looking. With luck, this will give us enough information to figure out the root cause for real this time.

The first three episodes of The Testaments were excellent. It's the sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, but with a YA approach (not that it's any less dystopic).

I've read the book, but some things don't fit in the TV adaptation, so it's possible that they've changed an important plot point. We'll see.

It's pretty obvious that Becka is sapphic. <3

I've tried both the first episode of Kusunoki's Garden of Gods and the first episode of Kujima: Why Sing, When You Can Warble? and I've opted to watch Kusunoki's Garden of Gods.

Minato lives in a cozy fantasy with gods and spirits, while Harima lives in a dangerous exorcist story. Shall I ship them?

It's available on Crunchyroll.

++ After seventeen years since the site launched, Archive Of Our Own is finally exiting its beta testing phase. They announced this the day after April Fool's when they did the hilarious joke of changing the "beta" on the site to "omega" (as part of the A/B/O, a.k.a. Omegaverse, trope), which was a clever way of announcing the transition from finally getting out of beta the day after. Bless AO3, truly.

++ Everything involving the Artemis II mission around the moon has been utterly captivating.

I actually wasn't aware this was going to happen, so when I heard about that they launched people to the moon I unfortunately thought this was something in relation to SpaceX, but I was thankfully corrected that this was a NASA mission and my mood shifted to being utterly delighted. Just every single update we're getting from their mission thus far has been amazing, because while we've been to the moon before this is the first mission since Apollo 17 in 1972. I'm someone who loves space, and any kind of space exploration where it favors science and the human curiosity of understanding what lies beyond the stars is worthy to be excited about.
